How Is a Wound Culture Taken?
Wound cultures are usually taken using a swab. This swab is then sent to a laboratory where it will be placed on a dish containing nutrients that help bacteria grow. Once the bacteria begins to grow, the laboratory will identify the type of bacteria and determine which antibiotics will work best to treat the infection.
Cultures can usually be done quickly and easily in your doctor’s office or at the hospital. The results of the culture usually come back within two to three days. In some cases, more than one swab may be needed in order to get an accurate result.
